The Life & Love of Trees by Lewis Blackwell

For the Life & Love of Trees by Lewis Blackwell was the first photography book I ever purchased. My family and I were vacationing in New Mexico and had planned to visit a museum a few miles away from our VRBO. After arriving, we were met with a letter taped to the door stating the museum was closed. Disappointing, but understandable; the entire country was only just coming out of COVID lockdown.

Hoping to save the afternoon, we walked around the block to see what other attractions were nearby and were happy to find a very large used bookstore! My family loves bookstores, and once inside, we all scattered to our respective sections. Most bookstores I visit, whether new or used, have relatively small sections devoted to photography. This store was different, and an hour or so later, my family started looking for me. After another 30 minutes passed, their collective patience was starting to wear thin.

For the Life & Love of Trees is exactly what a photography book should be. It is big, it is beautiful, and it is inspiring. Its dimensions are roughly 12.5 x 12.5 x 1 and it weighs in at over 4.5 pounds. This book is filled with one and two-page spreads, and the printing and color rendering are fantastic.

I first fell in love with trees when I lived in North Carolina. Moving from an area of the US that is mostly populated with evergreen pines, central North Carolina is mostly populated with deciduous hardwoods. Living in an area of the country that actually had seasons, and autumn colors, was breathtaking. For a time, we lived in a house surrounded by hardwoods and I came to love the cool shade, fresher air, rough bark, and the crunch of leaves covering the forest floor. The spread photographed above brings back good memories.

The Life & Love of Trees doesn’t just contain beautiful photos, it is full of poetry, prose, and education. It really is a celebration of forests and trees.

If you, or someone you know, love trees or nature in general, they will appreciate The Life & Love of Trees, which, in 200 pages, covers trees from around the world, and in every season.

In addition to The Life & Love of Trees, Lewis Blackwell has produced a number of other photography books, including others in his “Life & Love” series, all of which can be seen on his author page on Amazon.com.
