A Neighborhood in Winter

Growing up, it never snowed where I lived. Instead, every few years it would sleet, and that was as good as snow to us. Seeing the sleet covering the ground yesterday morning brought back old memories.

The forecast kept calling for snow, but I never saw any.

I suppose I live in a typical suburban neighborhood. It is safe, usually quiet, and largely uninteresting. But I guess that is why many migrate to suburbia. They want a safe place to raise a family and a safe real estate investment that they hope to sell one day for a profit. If one’s neighborhood was less safe, less quiet, or a little too interesting, one or both of those motives might be in jeopardy.

Yesterday, knowing freezing rain was going to hit today, I went out to explore my peaceful little neighborhood and grab a snapshot or two of it under winter’s blanket.

Interestingly, while my neighborhood looks like this,

and this.

It also looks like this.

I assure you, not all Texas neighborhoods but up against a cow pasture, but mine does.

The sad thing is, I lived in this neighborhood for years before I realized it. This pasture is less than a five-minute walk from my house, and I never knew it existed until a little less than a year ago when, because I had a camera in hand, I walked down a different path. I think maybe there is a lesson here.

Anyway, I would be remiss if I didn’t include this last photo as well.

The man on the sled is a neighbor who is older than I am, and the sled he is on is older than he is. He said the sled had been in the family for over 70 years but having raised his kids in Texas, they never got much of a chance to use it. I’m glad he was finally able to put it to good use!
